If you are buying your first RV, it will be both exciting and scary. This will be one of your biggest purchases you will make besides your house, and you want to be sure you get both a fair price and the RV you want. The first decision you will have made is to purchase an RV instead of renting one when you want to go on vacation. This is especially important if you are planning to use the RV often for long weekends when you don’t want the inconvenience of finding, renting, picking up and returning an RV after a short trip. Besides the actual cost of purchasing an RV, insurance will be expensive as well as needing a safe place to store the RV when it’s not being used.
There are a few things I would recommend before purchasing your first RV. Talk to RV owners, its best in person where you can have a conversion, but also check internet message boards where current owners will try to be helpful. Don’t be afraid to post a question. Be sure to ask what they like and dislike so you can determine what might be of concern for you and your family. It’s always good to check independent reviews such as Consumer Reports who provide fair ratings and informative commentary. Because of an RV is a “big” ticket item, some people prefer to rent the model they want to own first to make sure it meets their needs and is easy to drive and maneuver.
As with cars and SUV’s, there are many different price ranges for RV’s, from simple to luxury models. They also depreciate very quickly, which is a good reason to buy a used model. It’s very possible to purchase a relatively new RV because the owner changed their mind or cannot keep up with the payments. Luxury RV’s can be over 40 feet long and cost over $250,000. Many amenities can be added including an extra half bath for guests, a washer/dryer combo or a walk in closet. I even saw an RV advertised with a sauna. But most people will buy a smaller, but very nice RV’s. For as little as 50,000 - $100,000 range, you can buy a great RV which will have all the basic necessities along with lots of exciting additions.
