It seems that bass fishing has gained the attention of the general public like never before. It once was just Sunday television entertainment but now it seems that men, women, and children alike are jumping aboard the band wagon. Presently bass fishing is the number one freshwater sport in America. So what makes bass fishing such a popular sport?
One thing is that unlike athletic sports which require a certain amount of fitness and specific abilities, bass fishing can be easily adapted to anyone who has a considerable interest in the sport. Bass fishing is far more than a spectator sport, it’s a family sport. It’s highly significant to family relationships because it allows for a common area of interest to incorporate a bond between the family members. While even in the family realm it may be competitive, it’s all in fun. Let’s face it, everyone loves those “the one that got away” tales.
If you’re a beginner in the sport a significant point is that bigger is not always better. This is important only because often people get the impression that a bigger pole offers better opportunities. The problem with larger poles is that you don’t always notice a fish is even there which defeats the whole purpose of the sport. A five foot pole seems adequate because it is at the right length to get a challenge from a fish as small as one pound.
As a beginner you probably have no clue about bait. Most beginners associate fishing with a pole, hook, and worm. In bass fishing a tackle box equipped with crankbaits and spinnerbaits is sufficient. Plastic worms are also efficient in catching bass however this method may require some amount of patience. Crankbaits are actually fun to use because you’re not limited to the throwing and retrieving method. You can develop your own styles by speed variation or lowering and raising the pole. The more color associated with these baits the more consistent the hits will become. You may also bump them against objects in the water from time to time to attract more attention.
Spinnerbaits also work extremely well but quite honestly more skill is involved in using them. Don’t let this be a factor in your decision to use them though because they do offer quite a pleasing fishing experience.
Whatever method you choose you will develop your skill to suit you. A combination of the three baits during fishing expeditions gives a satisfying collaboration.
