At Home Electrical System

Most people take their electric for granted unless, of course, it malfunctions. Understanding your home’s electrical system can help you to avoid potential problems.

Most homes are equipped with a primary circuit attached with their local electric supplier. A box called a circuit breaker is used to maintain this. Each is supplied with two one hundred and twenty volt “hot wires” and one neutral wire. These wires connect directly into the circuit breaker. In some cases, there are additional breakers installed. A home is branched out so to speak, so that the breaker can easily control each branch. This prevents the potential for electrical overload.

Circuit breakers and fuses are crucial safety devices. They easily switch off the flow of electricity if a condition requires them to do so. Fuses aren’t as convenient as breakers because they have a one time usage strategy. However, they are just as adequate in protecting your home. A circuit breaker is designed so that if too much of a load is placed on a circuit the breaker “trips” and ends the flow of electricity. This can happen for a variety of reasons: having too many devices plugged into one circuit, a faulty device, short circuit, or various other causes.

Without the use of a breaker an overload device could be damaged. Even more significant is the fact that not using a circuit breaker can put you at severe risk of having a fire. This could result from heat being generated by a specific device or a spark from your electrical wiring. If you already have a breaker installed keeping it well maintained and upgraded is essential. Unless you’re skilled in the electrical field it’s best to leave it’s maintenance to a professional. Trying to save a few pennies by giving yourself a quick course in electrical maintenance may cause you several dollars in damage in the end.
